DO I HEAR A WALTZ

Stephen Sondheim and Richard Rodgers' classic musical tale brought to life brand new in Showtunes! production.

In this touching, bittersweet musical, Leona Samish is an American tourist from the Midwest with romantic notions of love waiting to be discovered amidst the canals and gondolas of Venice, Italy. After her friends' vacation plans change, she decides to travel alone to the land of olives and Lotharios. Under the magical spell of Venice, Leona falls for a charming Italian shopkeeper, Renato Di Rossi, and learns that, even in the most romantic of settings, love comes with a price.

The creation of this 1965 Broadway musical featured a one-time, often stormy collaboration between famed composer Richard Rodgers, lyricist Stephen Sondheim, Playwright Arthur Laurents’ based his libretto on his play The Time of the Cuckoo, later freely adapted as the Katharine Hepburn film Summertime. The Showtunes! production of the Tony Award-nominated musical will feature the “revisal” version of the show, featuring the restored original score, and updated book, developed in acclaimed productions of the show at New Jersey’s George Street Playhouse in 1999, and Pasadena Playhouse in 2001.

"Like a fine Italian wine this is a show that has definitely improved with age."

Hughes says “Maggie (Pehrson, co-producer) and I are so pleased that we are able to introduce Puget Sound audiences to this remarkable score and script by three giants of the American musical theatre. Like a fine Italian wine this is a show that has definitely improved with age. This is the kind of work that totally embraces Showtunes! mission to celebrate “lost” Broadway musicals and showcase Seattle’s vast talent pool. ”

Do I Hear A Waltz? is being staged at Issaquah’s Village Theatre, and both Hughes and Pehrson hope this production will be the first of many collaborations with the popular Eastside theatre company. Says Pehrson, “We were happy to accept (VT executive producer) Robb Hunt’s and (artistic director) Steve Tomkins’ invitation to bring Showtunes! to the Village, which they extended after seeing our acclaimed 2002 staging of 110 in the Shade. Village Theatre embraces musicals as the heart of its season schedule, and bringing in our concert productions of “lost musicals” fits in well with their mainstage shows and new works series.”
